Kim Davies will stage her adaptation of 'Miss Julie' for a modern day audience with SMOKE which will begin previews at the Southwark Playhouse on February 1st, ahead of a scheduled opening night on February 3rd and performances running to February 25th, 2023.
Smoke is set in a “pre Me Too” time in New York City, and follows the exploits of Julie and John as they begin get to know each other sexually and eventually dip their toes into the murky world of 'BDSM'. As they discover one another, their boundaries become blurred leading to lifechanging consequences.
Polina Kalinina and Júlia Levai co-direct Oli Higginson and Meaghan Martin in Smoke with Kim Davies commenting on the production stating, “I couldn’t be more honoured that such a talented group of artists has been assembled for the London premiere of this play. It means so much to me that this play continues to speak to audiences almost a decade after I wrote it—and perhaps all the more so in a culture that has now more fully reckoned with the #metoo movement and sexual abuse in both mainstream and kink culture”.
The wider creative team behind Smoke features sound design by Jamie Lu, set design by Sami Fendall, and lighting design by Rajiv Pattani.
Smoke will open at the Southwark Playhouse on February 1st, 2023. The Southwark Playhouse is an small off West End small venue located close to Borough and Elephant and Castle underground stations. Seating in the venue is on a single level and is sold as general admission seating so patrons can sit where they like and are advised to arrive early to get the best views when attending shows at the venue. Due to the small and compact layout of the venue no seats have restricttions or obstructions and good views of the stage are available throughout the seating area.
