Legendary star of stage and screen, BRIAN COX (Succession), stars at the Theatre Royal Haymarket as Johann Sebastian Bach in The Score, Oliver Cotton’s new play, originally presented at the Theatre Royal Bath.
Potsdam, Prussia. It's Spring 1747, and Johann Sebastian Bach makes a reluctant visit to the court of Frederick II, Europe’s most dangerous and ambitious leader. The two men seem to have absolutely nothing in common. Bach is a deeply religious man, while Frederick is an atheist. Bach studies scripture, Frederick reads military history. Bach loathes war, Frederick revels in it. Despite their differences, however, Frederick remains in awe of Bach’s genius and has mischievously concocted a musical conundrum, hoping it will amuse his court and baffle the composer. The explosive events of the days that followed could not have been predicted by either man.
Brian Cox has had a glittering career that has spanned over six decades, garnering numerous awards, and has collaborated with the world's most esteemed theatre companies and renowned TV and Hollywood directors. Cox has won the Olivier Award for Best Actor twice, and his portrayal in the HBO hit series Succession also won him a Golden Globe award and Emmy nominations.
Nicole Ansari-Cox co-stars in the production. Her major credits to date include The Biographer, Deadwood, and Blumenthal on screen, and starring in Tom Stoppard’s Rock’n’Roll on stage.
Former artistic director of the National Theatre and the RSC, Trevor Nunn’s multi-award-winning repertoire ranges from Les Misérables to The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.
