Mike Bartlett’s new play will premiere in the West End at the Garrick Theatre next year. Performances of Unicorn will begin on 4th February for a strictly limited run.
James Macdonald will direct Bartlett's play which follows Polly and Nick, a couple, who seemingly have it all. But there seems to be something missing from their lives which is needed to give it that 'spark'.
The cast of Unicorn features Stephen Mangan (The Split, Episodes), Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, The Split), and Erin Doherty (The Crown, Death of England: Closing Time, Chloe).
Nicola Walker commented on the production, saying, “Mike Bartlett’s Unicorn is that rare beast you long to see, it’s grown-up and unusual and very, very funny.”
Stephen Mangan said, “I would have needed my head examined if I’d passed up the opportunity to be involved in this play by the brilliant Mike Bartlett. It’s hilarious, provocative, intelligent, and deeply moving. And it’s being directed by the peerless James Macdonald. And Erin Doherty is in it. As is my old friend and TV ex-wife Nicola Walker. It’s just an embarrassment of riches.”
Erin Doherty also commented, “To get to work with Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan is a massive moment for me. Combine that with this genius team and this brilliant play, I’m ecstatic. I can’t wait to get in the rehearsal room.”
Mike Bartlett added, “Kate Horton has championed Unicorn from the moment she read it, and I’m thrilled it will be the first play her new company produces. I’m so happy to get the chance to get to work with James Macdonald and Miriam Buether again, and with the incredible Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan, and Erin Doherty – all superb actors I’ve been a fan of for a long time.”
Unicorn reunites Bartlett, Macdonald, and producer Kate Horton following their collaboration at the Royal Court in 2009 on the original production of Cock.
The wider creative team behind the production also includes lighting designer Natasha Chivers, designer Miriam Buether, and sound designer Ian Dickinson.

The Garrick Theatre is a medium size West End theatre which has a capacity of 735 seats. Studying the seating plan in detail before purchase is highly recommended as there are numerous support pillars and circle overhangs that restrict the view from many seats. Patrons will also often hear the rattle of the underground trains during productions as tube lines run directly below the theatre.
The best views in the theatre are in the Stalls and Dress Circle section and sitting between Row D and J in the Stalls offers an excellent and unrestricted view. The Dress Circle also offers clear and detailed views of the stage and is a brilliant vantage point although this does tend to be reflected in the ticket price.
The best budget seats for those looking to secure cheap lastminute tickets to Unicorn can be found towards the rear of the Stalls, where seats are regularly discounted due to the many support pillars and overhang from the Dress Circle. Value can also be found in the clear-view seats in the Upper Circle for a cheap alternative.
