Matt Henry is to join the cast of The Devil Wears Prada, when the much anticipated musical opens this October at the Dominion Theatre in London.
The Olivier Award winner takes on the role of creative fashion director Nigel in the new musical about the cut-throat, high-stakes world of fashion journalism, based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 best-selling novel and the subsequent 2006 blockbuster Hollywood movie starring Merryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt.
Henry has previous stage credits for Saturday Night Fever, Avenue Q, and The Drifters Girl, and won an Olivier Award for his performance as Lola in Kinky Boots. He was also a finalist in the TV talent contest The Voice.
Henry will join the previously announced Vanessa Williams, who will star as Editor-in-Chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly.
Henry commented on the new appointment, saying, “Having been a huge fan of the film, a passion for fashion, and the fact that the role of Nigel is iconic, what’s not to love about joining the cast of The Devil Wears Prada The Musical?! Being able to draw inspiration and pay homage to the leading black men in the fashion industry, such as the amazing Edward Enninful and the late André Leon Talley is what truly excites me about taking on this incredible role.”
The production will feature an original musical score by Olivier and Tony Award winner Sir Elton John, book by Kate Wetherhead, lyrics by singer-songwriter Shaina Taub, and direction and choreography by three-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell.
The plot of The Devil Wears Prada follows the fortunes of aspiring journalist Andy, who manages to score a job at the prestigious Runway magazine working for the terrifying and all-powerful Miranda Priestly. Although she has to sacrifice her personal life to meet the impossible demands set by Miranda, Andy finds herself slowly seduced by the glamorous world she used to despise.
Further casting for The Devil Wears Prada is to be announced in due course.
