Following performances at the Edinburgh Fringe back in 2018, David Ireland’s award-winning social satire, Ulster American will play at the Riverside Studios later this year from 4th December to 28th January 2024, directed by Jeremy Herrin, with a press night scheduled for 13th December.
Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominated actor Woody Harrelson will make his long-awaited return to the London stage after almost twenty years to take on the role of the American Oscar-winning actor Jay Conway.
Joining him in the production will be BAFTA and Emmy award-winning actor Andy Serkis portraying English director Leigh Carver. Louise Harland will star as Northern Irish playwright Ruth Davenport.
Commenting on the forthcoming production, Herrin said: "I'm delighted that this rollercoaster of a play has summoned such a stellar roster of talent to join us for this pitch-black comedy at the beautifully refurbished Riverside Studios. I've always admired David Ireland’s fearlessness and the way he manages to skewer pretension in its many guises. It’s an honour to bring the legend that is Woody Harrelson to London; to welcome Andy Serkis back to the stage after so much success in the movies, and to enjoy the brilliant Louisa Harland going toe-to-toe with them both. It'll be a thrilling evening and I can't wait to see our audience's reaction to this explosive show."
The wider creative team joining Herrin in the production will feature sound designer Emma Laxton, costume designer Max Jones, and lighting designer Olivia Fenwick.
The plot focuses on rehearsals for a potentially career-transforming new play which are underway with an English director, Oscar-winning American actor, and a Northern Irish playwright. As stress levels bubble and tensions rise, the evening takes on a chaotic turn as cultural identity, power dynamics, and the challenges women face in the entertainment industry are all explored in this dark satire.
