Following the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, it has been announced that Her Majesty’s Theatre will now be renamed as His Majesty’s Theatre. The change of name is expected to take place at an appropriate time after the coronation of King Charles III and a date for the change in name will be announced in due course.
The change in name of the theatre is in line with other changes following the death of the Queen which will include the new representation on money, stamps, and postboxes.
Her Majesty’s Theatre first opened in 1705 and was named in honour of Queen Anne, and then subsequently became the King's Theatre in 1714 after King George I.
The changes in name from ‘His’ or ‘Her Majesty’s’ has come to reflect the current monarch, and the venue last changed name from His to Her Majesty's Theatre back in 1952.
Her Majesty’s Theatre is owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Theatres Group and is currently home to the long running musical The Phantom of the Opera. The venue has four levels with premium seats being located in the centre of the Stalls section on the ground floor and at the front of the Dress Circle one level up. The theatre does have an issue with restricted view seating on all levels due to overhangs and pillars so studying the seating plan prior to purchase is definitely recommended. There is good value to be found in the clear view seats at the rear of the Stalls and also in the Grand Circle section on the third level which can suit bargain hunters looking to find lastminute theatre ticket deals. The Balcony section on the 3rd floor does offer cheap Phantom of the Opera tickets however these are very high up and may not be suitable for people suffering from vertigo.
