Wyndham's Theatre

The Wyndham's Theatre is a west-end theatre located on Charing Cross Road directly above Leicester Square Underground Station.  It is one of two theatres to be opened by actor/manager Charles Wyndham and was designed in 1898 by W.G.R Sprague.  The Wyndham's was designed to accommodate 759 patrons seated on three levels although a later refurbishment program added an additional level to four. The theatre received a Grade II listing from English Heritage in 1960.

Charles Wyndham was able to achieve a lifelong ambition when through the admiration of a patron and the financial generosity of friends he was able to build a theatre of his own and open the Wyndham's Theatre to the public in November 1899, with the Prince Of Wales in attendance. The first play to be performed at the theatre was 'David Garrick' by T.W. Robertson.

Gerald Du Maurier, began a close association with the theatre in 1910 which lasted 15 years. Du Maurier's daughter, Daphne, often watched her father's performances from the wings and 30 years later presented her own play at the theatre called 'The Years Between'.

Notable runs at the Wyndham's Theatre include a small-scale musical pastiche, 'The Boyfriend' by Sandy Wilson, which in 1954 had begun life at the much smaller Players Theatre but was moved to the Wyndham's and ran for a phenomenal 2078 performances, before transferring to Broadway.  During the 1960s and early 1970s the theatre continued to attract star names such as Diana Rigg, Vanessa Redgrave, and Alec Guiness.

Another production of note to showcase at the venue was 'Godspell', which opened at Wyndham's in January 1972 and played for two years. The original cast in the production included Jeremy Irons, David Essex, and Marti Caine.

Delfont-Mackintosh Ltd. took over the theatre in 2005, and in October of that year presented Tom Stoppard's adaptation of 'Heroes' starring Richard Griffiths and John Hurt.

In 2006, the theatre hosted a new production of Joanne Murray-Smith's 'Honour' starring Diana Rigg and later hosted the west-end transfer of Sunday In The Park With George' starring Daniel Evans which was subsequently followed by the west end transfer of National Theatre play, 'The History Boys' by Alan Bennett, which played to sell-out houses throughout its run until April the next year.

Other recent productions of note at the Wyndhams Theatre include 'The Letter', Twelfth Night'. 'Shadowlands', 'Hamlet' and 'Leopoldstadt'

FAQ's About Booking Tickets To The Wyndham's Theatre

How Can I Book Cheap Tickets To The Wyndham's Theatre?

The Wyndham's Theatre do sometimes offer a small selection of 'day tickets' to shows for die hard bargain hunters willing to pitch up early in the morning and queue.  Other ways to secure cheap tickets would be to concentrate on either midweek and off peak performances with the weeks that follow on directly after school holidays being particularly successful.

Will There Ever Be Discount Tickets To The Wyndham's Theatre Online?

This will very much depend on market forces however theatre producers do tend to work week by week when it comes to pricing structures so it can be beneficial to check prices on a regular basis checking for potential discount tickets.  There will always be quiet weeks in the West End and if you are flexible with dates then this could be very much to your advantage and potentially bring big savings.

Should I Avoid Booking Tickets To The Wyndham's Theatre That Feature A Restricted View?

The Wyndham's Theatre has four tiers - stalls on the ground floor with a direct view of the stage, royal circle on the first floor looking down, then the grand circle on the second floor and finally on the third floor and very high up there is the balcony. The stalls section has minor issues with the overhang from the royal circle that can affect the view of the stage from row N onwards. The four front rows are also not raked, but apart from that the stalls seats offer excellent views of the stage.  In the royal circle it is only the seats in row G that can be affected from the overhang from the grand circle but there can sometimes be issues with legroom which may not be ideal for taller patrons.  The seats in grand circle feature the same legroom issues and are set very high up in this theatre with the balcony section set even higher up and feels a long way from the stage, but with no restrictions to the view. Any tickets that feature a restricted view should be clearly marked for transparency and should also be priced accordingly.  It is always recommended to check the seating plan thoroughly before you book.

Is It Cheaper To Book Matinee Tickets At The Wyndham's Theatre?

It can be.  When certain productions feature a big name in the lead role it is often the case that they will allow the understudy to perform for the midweek matinee performance and this is usually reflected in the price of the ticket so if it is the actual production that you are more interested in than the personell then it can bring big savings to check midweek matinee prices on a regular basis.
