Upstairs at the Gatehouse is an Off-West End theatre located in Highgate Village, North London.
Since 1997, the award-winning venue has presented a varied programme of plays, musicals, opera, and more in the Victorian 122-seat auditorium.
The theatre provides a home for established fringe companies and supports new writing, early-career artists, and innovative revivals.
The theatre receives no government funding and relies on the generous support of patrons and donations.
Upstairs at the Gatehouse was established in 1997 by John and Katie Plews of Ovation Theatres who transformed the venue from a derelict Victorian music hall into an essential part of the London theatre landscape.
Annlouise Butt and Isaac Bernier-Doyle started as Artistic Directors in 2023.
The Gatehouse pub is possibly the oldest of the inns in Highgate with claims that there has been a licensed building on the site since 1337.
The building has evolved to suit its various functions, including as a courtroom and meeting house. Cruikshank, Byron, and Dickens all used its services, and the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution’s inaugural meeting was held there on January 16th, 1839.
The auditorium was opened in 1895 as Highgate Hall. Its uses have included a cinema, a Victorian Music Hall, a Masonic Lodge, and a venue for amateur dramatics.
Upstairs at the Gatehouse is a member of the Society of Independent Theatres and is situated above The Gatehouse Pub, operated and owned by Urban Pubs and Bars.
