Theatre Royal Stratford East

About Theatre Royal Stratford

The Theatre Royal Stratford East was built in 1884 and is a producing theatre located in the heart of East London, just a short walk from Stratford station. The venue has a proud history and represents our socially and culturally diverse community in their work, telling stories that are current, political and representative of 21st-century London.

The Company received international recognition with acclaimed productions, and many leading writers, actors, and directors have been part of the Theatre Royal Stratford East family, including Barbara Windsor, Sheila Hancock, Meera Syal, Don Warrington, Roy Williams, Indhu Rubasingham, Tanika Gupta, and Cynthia Erivo.

The theatre's extensive archive was acquired by the British Library in 2020 for preservation and research.

The Theatre Royal Stratford East is located right in the heart of the town centre and just a short walk from Stratford tube station. The venue has three levels of seating, friendly staff on hand, a nice competitively priced bar compared with the West End, and also a garden that provides a real community feel to it.

The theatre looks small giving it a sense of cosiness with the auditorium looking like a nostalgic throwback to the Victorian music hall era. The theatre is laid out on a slightly smaller scale compared to today's "modern" theatres, so some seating can be slightly cramped in some areas.

Comfortable seats can be found in and around the centre of the stalls with good legroom. The front rows of the Jean Brown Dress Circle are also a good vantage point to view the action. The theatre has a pricing structure that features several tiers so studying the seating plan before purchase is recommended to achieve maximum value for money.
