The Royal Opera House (ROH) in London is a historic opera house and performing arts venue located in Covent Garden. The venue is the home of The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site in 1732, the Theatre Royal, functioned primarily as a playhouse, however, in 1734, the first ballet was presented at the venue with the first season of operas, by George Frideric Handel, began a year later.
The current structure is the third theatre to be built on the site, following devastating fires in 1808 and 1856 to previous buildings. The façade, auditorium, and foyer date from 1858, but most other elements of the modern complex date from reconstruction in the 1990s.
The main auditorium can seat 2,256 people, making it the third-largest theatre in London. The theatre has four tiers of boxes, balconies, and an amphitheatre gallery.
