The Royal Court Theatre was built in 1888 and has two performance spaces. The theatre was rebuilt in 1996.
The two performance spaces at the Royal Court Theatre consist of - The Theatre Downstairs (Main House) and the smaller Theatre Upstairs. The present building was completed in 1888 and opened as the New Court Theatre. The venue was used as a cinema from 1935 to 1940 but eventually in 1952, the building re-opened as a theatre. In 1956, the English Stage Company took control of the Royal Court.
The interior of the theatre was completely rebuilt in 1996, except for the auditorium and the façade, and reopened in February 2000.
