The King’s Head Theatre stands on a site that has been used as a public house since 1543. For most of that time, it has been known as the King’s Head Tavern. The current building was erected in the 1800s.
Dan Crawford founded the King’s Head Theatre in 1970, in a room previously used as a pool hall, and boxing ring, and established the first pub theatre in London since the days of Shakespeare. The pub became well-known under his management for ringing up pounds, shillings, and pence right up until 2008, nearly four decades after the rest of the UK had switched to decimal currency. The pub remains packed with other period details, including the original bar, gas lights, old photography, and a coal fire. The walls inside the pub display the multitude of famous faces that have appeared here.
The Olivier Award-winning UpClose Productions became the resident company of the theatre in 2010. UpClose Productions produces a minimum of eight shows each year and also curates work from visiting companies all year round.
The theatre continually evolves with recent additions including new house lights in the auditorium and the introduction of allocated seating, with more innovative and exciting changes planned for the future.
