The Bush Theatre first opened in 1972 in a small room above a pub on the corner of Shepherd’s Bush Green. Since then the venue has produced more than 500 premieres and nurtured the careers of a catalgue of now-established writers like James Graham, Lucy Kirkwood, Simon Stephens, Temi Wilkey, Arinzé Kene, and Jack Thorne, and provided a springboard to launch the careers of actors including Andrew Scott, Alan Rickman, Victoria Wood, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
In 2011, the venue moved to the old library on Uxbridge Road, which underwent redevelopment before reopening in 2017. In 2022 The Bush Theatre celebrated its 50th birthday and remains at the forefront of new British playwriting by working closely with the local community and championing artist development.
The Bush Theatre is firmly rooted in its local community and features two performance spaces: the Holloway Theatre, and the smaller intimate Studio. The venue also contains a Writer’s Room and Attic rehearsal space, along with the vibrant Library Bar and Café, garden terrace, and the Script Library, which is the largest public theatre reference library in the UK.
The Bush Theatre is a registered charity and relies on support from donors.
