Vanessa Williams, (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) has been cast in the role of Miranda Priestly in the forthcoming new West End musical The Devil Wears Prada. The show will open at the Dominion Theatre on October 24th, 2024.
The musical which features a score from Olivier and Tony Award winner Sir Elton John, is based on Lauren Weisberger's best-selling 2003 novel and the subsequent 2006 blockbuster movie, which starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. Williams will star as the Editor-in-Chief of Runway Magazine and is the first cast member to be confirmed for this new production. In addition to Sir Elton John's musical score, the wider creative team will feature a book by Kate Wetherhead, lyrics from singer-songwriter Shaina Taub, and direction and choreography by multiple Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell.
Commenting on her new appointment, Vanessa Williams commented, “Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.”
The production will play a series of preview performances at Theatre Royal Plymouth this summer, before its West End opening in October.
The musical follows the fortunes of aspiring journalist Andy, who gets a job at the famous Runway Magazine working for the fashion world's most powerful (and terrifying) icon — editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly.
As she sacrifices her personal life to meet Miranda's impossible demands and expectations, Andy finds herself being slowly seduced by the glamorous world she used to despise.
The remainder of the creative team behind the show includes set designer Tim Hatley, costume designer Gregg Barnes, lighting designer Bruno Poet, and sound designer Gareth Owen.
Further casting will be announced in due course.
