Tracy-Ann Oberman will reprise her role as Shylock at the Trafalgar Theatre in The Merchant of Venice 1936 in the West End when it returns to London this December for a limited season.
Oberman (Doctor Who, EastEnders) became the first British actress to play the role of Shylock when the popular production toured the UK last year, before playing a limited season in February at the Criterion Theatre.
The production is set to embark on a second 8-week UK tour after the play closes in London on 25th London.co.ukJanuary, 2025.
William Shakespeare’s classic play has been adapted by Brigid Larmour and Oberman and is now transported to East London in the 1930s in the backdrop of the Battle of Cable Street.
Speaking of the appointment, Oberman commented: “I am so delighted that, by popular demand, MOV1936 is coming back into the West End so soon after we finished. Demand has been so high that I feel bringing it back, and this time to the beautiful Trafalgar Theatre and then on a national tour, is essential. The message of my female Shylock - based on my Great Grandma, a widow in the East End standing up to Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists, with all her neighbours and others horrified by the message of BUF - feels more pertinent than ever. The play is about unity, standing together against hatred and the play’s impact has been beyond my wildest hopes and ambitions for it.”

The Trafalgar Theatre (formally Trafalgar Studios) is a small West End theatre located on Whitehall and has a capacity of 616 seats.
The best seats in the theatre are situated in rows D to H in the centre section of the Stalls which offer excellent, central, intimate, and completely unobstructed views of the stage. The rows A to C at the front of the Dress Circle are also excellent, and offer elevated views of the action down below for people who prefer to look down on the stage.
Value for money can be found in the middle rows of the Dress Circle which can tend to be slightly cheaper than the premium seats, but thanks to a decent rake have clear views of the stage. Either the side seating in the Stalls or further back from premium will also save money without compromising on the overall experience and will suit those on a budget looking for cheap tickets to The Merchant Of Venice 1936 or last-minute shows in London.
