'The 39 Steps' Returns To The West End For Summer Season

Latest West End News

The Olivier and Tony Award-winning comedy The 39 Steps is set to make a welcome return to London's West End this summer at the Trafalgar Theatre for a strictly limited seven-week season.

This is the first time the much-loved show has returned to the capital since 2015, and a nationwide tour of this production is currently running until August 3rd.

Speaking of the upcoming West End season, producer Ed Snape commented: “We cannot think of a better production to delight audiences this summer than with this hilarious, joyous, and quintessentially British adaptation by Patrick Barlow of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy thriller. There is nothing quite like sitting in a theatre filled with laughter and this play always delivers.”

The plot of the show follows fortunes of our dashing hero, Richard Hannay, who finds himself in a bit of a pickle when he is framed for murder after a chance meeting with a mysterious female spy. The inventive and gripping comedy features a cast of just just four actors, who play an astonishing 139 roles between them in just 100 minutes of thrilling and fast-paced action.

The 39 Steps is directed by Nicola Samer, with the creative team featuring lighting designer Ian Scott, designer Peter McKintosh, director of movement Toby Sedgwick, and sound designer Mic Pool.

This production is directed by Maria Aitken and is a remount of the award-winning production which has been adapted by Patrick Barlow.

Casting for The 39 Steps in London is yet to be announced.

Booking & Theatre Info For The 39 Steps

The Trafalgar Theatre (formally Trafalgar Studios) is a small West End theatre located on Whitehall and has a capacity of 616 seats.

The best seats in the theatre are situated in rows D to H in the centre section of the Stalls which offer excellent, central, intimate, and completely unobstructed views of the stage. The rows A to C at the front of the Dress Circle are also excellent, and offer elevated views of the action down below for people who prefer to look down on the stage.

Value for money can be found in the middle rows of the Dress Circle which can tend to be slightly cheaper than the premium seats, but thanks to a decent rake have clear views of the stage. Either the side seating in the Stalls or further back from premium will also save money without compromising on the overall experience and will suit those on a budget looking for cheap tickets to The 39 Steps or last-minute shows in London.
