A stage adaptation of The Hunger Games is on its way to London and will receive its world premiere in the Autumn of 2024.
It will be the first stage adaptation of the internationally acclaimed novel by Suzanne Collins, which has already been adapted into a blockbuster Hollywood movie franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence. The film adaptations of The Hunger Games have so far grossed almost $3 billion globally, with the latest installment and prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes set for release in cinemas on November 17th.
Olivier Award-winning playwright Conor McPherson will adapt The Hunger Games for the stage, and Matthew Dunster will direct the production.
Speaking of the new stage adaptation, Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games series, commented: "I'm very excited to be collaborating with the amazing team of Conor McPherson and Matthew Dunster as they bring their dynamic and innovative interpretation of The Hunger Games to the London stage."
Conor McPherson also added: "To receive Suzanne Collins' blessing to adapt The Hunger Games for the stage is both humbling and inspiring. She has created a classic story that continues to resonate now more than ever. In a world where the truth itself seems increasingly up for grabs, The Hunger Games beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance, and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially. This is turbo-charged storytelling of the highest order, and I'm hugely excited to bring it to a new generation of theatregoers and to Suzanne Collins' longstanding and devoted fans."
The wider creative team joining Dunster and McPherson will be made up of Gary Beestone (production manager), Ian Dickinson for Autograph (sound designer), Miriam Buether (set designer), Kev McCurdy (fight director), Charlotte Broom (choreographer), Moi Tran (costume designer), Lucy Carter (lighting designer), John Maddox for Suspended Illusions (performer flying), Tal Rosner (video designer), and Amy Ball (casting director).
The setting of The Hunger Games is the dystopian world of Panem and revolves around a deadly contest that sees teenagers from deprived and impoverished districts battle against one another for the entertainment of the Capitol's aristocracy. The story follows the fortunes of Katniss Everdeen, who defies the Capitol's tyranny and sparks a rebellion throughout Panem.
The cast, venue, and date will be announced in due course.
