Taking its name from the term many top-tier magicians use to describe themselves --THE FABULIST is a new romantic musical comedy with an operatic twist at the Charing Cross Theatre, set in 1929 in a movie studio in Tuscany. Agrofontido is a wandering fabulist who is smitten and seeks the hand of the eccentric screenwriter Clarice.
Unfortunately, the characters discover that romances on set can quickly get complicated. Featuring a book and lyrics by James Farwell who takes inspiration from Antonio Paisiello's opera, THE IMAGINARY ASTROLOGER which was written for, and became Catherine the Great's favorite opera.
Taking influence from Rossini but with a slightly lighter tone, Paisiello's uplifting and joyous style led to him becoming the favourite composer of both Catherine the Great and Napoleon, for whom he composed the coronation music.
