What does it take for a woman to make it in a man’s world?
Play On! A new Jazz musical at the Lyric Hammersmith based on Shakespeare’s classic play, “Twelfth Night.”
Vy is a talented songwriter trying to hit the big time in 1940s Harlem. After a series of setbacks, she learns from her uncle Jester how difficult it is for women to be taken seriously in a man’s world. But, Vy doesn't accept defeat. Using a blend of deception and cunning, she meets up with club owner The Duke, and nightclub singer Lady Liv and is eventually swept up in a syncopated symphony of mistaken identities, melodies, and romance.
Who will come out on the top of the pile? Play On! is the stylish retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, set in the dizzy jazz scene of the Cotton Club in New York, and is directed by Talawa’s Artistic Director, Michael Buffong, fusing the thrilling music of Duke Ellington with street dance choreography. Audiences can expect to be wowed by this spectacular musical that will have your hands clapping and toes tapping along with the timeless soundtrack.
