Opening Night Tickets – Gielgud Theatre

Making her much-anticipated return to musical theatre, the incomparable Sheridan Smith takes the starring role at the Gielgud Theatre in the world premiere of Opening Night from the creative minds of director Ivo van Hove and Rufus Wainwright. This beautifully new musical will showcase for a limited season from March 6th, 2024.

Based on John Cassavetes’ legendary movie, Opening Night charts the preparations of a theatre company to stage a new play on Broadway. Drama flares up behind the scenes after the star of the show is rocked by personal tragedy, and her turmoil forces the rest of the cast to deliver the performance of their lives.

Gielgud Theatre Seating Plan

The Gielgud Theatre is a medium size West End theatre that has three levels of seating with a capacity of 974 seats.

Premium seats in the theatre are located towards the middle of the Stalls section, just below the overhang from the Dress Circle. Patrons sitting up close to the front of the Stalls may miss some of the action at the rear of the stage, due to the height of the stage so aim to sit in rows N-P for the best overall experience.

The Gielgud Theatre also has three boxes at the rear of the Dress Circle enabling you to watch the production with added privacy, all of which boast a dedicated private entrance and quick access to the toilets and the bar in the interval.

The elevated sections of the theatre offer good value for those on a budget looking for lastminute shows or cheap tickets to Opening Night however, due to the shape of the Dress Circle, a number of these seats have a slightly restricted view of the stage, in particular towards the end of rows A and B which face the stage at an angle. There is also good value to be found in the Grand Circle but as always it is recommended to study the seating plan in detail before purchase as there are also some restrictions in this section due to the curve in the seating.

How Can I Book Cheap Tickets At The Gielgud Theatre?

There is often great anticipation about new West End productions when they open at the Gielgud Theatre so for bargain hunters looking for cheap or discount ticket options, the midweek matinee can often bring savings as there is a strong chance that understudies will be used which can reflect positively in the ticket price so if it is the production rather than the cast that interests you this should be looked at.

Are Upper Circle Tickets At The Gielgud Theatre Good Value?

There have been new seats installed in the upper circle of the Gielgud Theatre which offer better legroom than before and despite being quite high up there are not too many seats in this section that feature bad restrictions to the view. For patrons searching for good value when booking tickets in the upper circle, row F offers a completely clear view and also has the benefit of a corridor walkway directly in front for added legroom. Otherwise, the seats in the centre and at the front of the upper circle also have a good vantage point and should not be dismissed

Should I Avoid Tickets That Have A Restricted View?

There are three different levels in the theatre – stalls on the ground floor, a dress circle one level up, and then the upper circle on the second floor. Not too many seats in the Gielgud Theatre do feature restrictions although there are some issues from the overhang in the stalls from row R onwards which affects the top of the stage. The severity of the restriction should always be reflected in the price so please check the seating plan thoroughly before booking any tickets that are marked as having a restricted view. The dress circle section is only very slightly raked which can cause issues for shorter patrons and should be noted.
