Nachtland* by Marius von Mayenburg is a sharp satirical play about legacy, marriage, the rise of the new political right, and the terrible impulses that are sometimes buried deep within us. The Young Vic hosts the UK premiere, directed by Tony Award-winner Patrick Marber.
"Do you want this picture hanging over the kitchen table to remind you of your Daddy?"
Modern-day Germany. Philipp and Nicola argue as they clear out their late father's home. After they discover an old painting stashed in the attic though, things get savage.
The painting in question is of a quaint 1920s street scene from Vienna; the work of a limited artist who eventually abandoned his original vocation to pursue Nazism… Nicola wants to sell the painting. Philipp would rather keep it. Philipp’s wife Judith just wants to burn it.
Marius von Mayenburg is a prominent German playwright. His previous work includes plays such as 'Plastic', 'Fireface', and 'The Ugly One'.
*Nachtland is a made-up German word that suggests a place of eternal darkness.
