Nikolai has forgotten how to be happy. Is it just burnout? Or was he ever? He’s had a successful career. He’s married to the perfect woman, and should be heading into midlife feeling settled and confident. Sure, a few debts are piling up, and his wife has been suffering from some unexplained illnesses recently, but they’ve overcome bigger hurdles than this before. So what exactly is gnawing at him? Why does his world feel like it’s crumbling? Perhaps all he needs is to let his hair down and shake it off for a bit. Tonight, there's a party at the Lebedevs!
In his attempts to resuscitate his lust for life, Nikolai stumbles repeatedly from misstep to faux pas. Anna sacrificed it all to marry him: her ultra-conservative parents actually disowned her because of his political leanings. Nikolai knows he owes her happiness. It's just that he can’t quite remember where he left it. He knows that his constant partying is not raising her opinion of him. But with the alternative being to stay at home and let her see how miserable he is, what else can he do? Something has got to change; they both know it. But when change finally comes, it’s in the absurd, undignified form that life often presents to us in: an affair.
Can Nikolai save his marriage, his career, and his will to live, all at once? Or was it always going to go completely tits up?
