India, 1930. Noted Bloomsbury Group poet, Flora Crewe, undertakes a long journey through India for her health. Without any social inhibitions and completely free-spirited, she unsettles most of the people she encounters, but Nirad Das, a handsome Indian painter, is secretly captivated.
England, 1980s. An American biographer visits Flora's sister, Mrs Swan, to try to uncover exactly what happened on the trip. Das’ son suddenly appears in the garden carrying a painting of Flora by his father – a nude painting…
Satirising the self-importance of both the ruling class and academia, Tom Stoppard’s play, Indian Ink, is an evocative meditation on love and art that explores how creativity can be the bridge between even the most profound cultural barriers.
Tom Stoppard makes a return to London at the Hampstead Theatre with the first major revival of Indian Ink since 1995, when the role of Flora Crewe was created by Felicity Kendal, who also returns to play Mrs Swan in Jonathan Kent’s new production.
Jonathan Kent directs his first collaboration with Tom Stoppard. His previous stage credits at the Hampstead include Double Feature, House of Games, Good People, and The Forest.
