One of France’s longest-running and most successful plays and winner of four Molière Awards, Farewell Mister Haffmann makes its London premiere at the Park Theatre.
Set in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1942, imminent danger faces Jewish jeweller Joseph Haffmann as Jews are being rounded up for deportation across the city. Desperate, Joseph turns for help from his trusted employee Pierre Vigneau.
In an unconventional and risky deal, Joseph transfers the ownership of his jewellery store to Pierre in exchange for being hidden from the Nazis. But the arrangement comes with an unexpected condition: in return for hiding Joseph from the Nazis, Pierre requests that he enter into a particular arrangement with his wife, Isabelle. The unusual request raises the stakes of the deal, as all three struggle with the moral complexities and dangers of their situation.
An art-loving Nazi officer, his flamboyant wife, and a Matisse painting complicate matters even further for Joseph, Pierre, and Isabelle as the absurd demands and marital pressures pile up, their deal teeters on the brink of collapse.
Fusing suspense and dark humour against the backdrop of unprecedented times, Farewell Mister Haffmann shines a bright light on the strength of human resilience when faced with impossible choices.
