Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman will star in David Ireland’s The Fifth Step which will receive its West End premiere and showcase for a strictly limited run at @sohoplace this spring, following its premiere last year at the Edinburgh International Festival.
The Fifth Step is an unflinchingly honest play about addiction, faith, and masculinity. The play debuted at the Edinburgh International Festival last year starring Jack Lowden, who reprises his critically acclaimed role as Luka at @sohoplace this spring.
Commenting on the announcement, Jack Lowden stated: "To just be in the room again with David and Finn – two dangerously talented individuals – is a gift in itself. But to now add Martin to the mix, an actor of black belt level skill and a hero of mine, just tops it. I can’t wait for more people to experience The Fifth Step."
Martin Freeman agreed, also commenting: “I’m really looking forward to performing this brilliantly funny, unsettling, unexpected play. David Ireland is something quite special and Jack Lowden is an actor I have tremendous respect for and am looking forward to working with him.”
The play is an intimate portrayal of addiction and admissions which will be set ‘in the round,’ in the venue, offering a snapshot into the deeply private and personal world of AA members James (Martin Freeman) and Luka (Jack Lowden). The pair form an unlikely friendship, quickly bonding over a blend of black coffee and dark humour as they negotiate the 12 steps together. But is everyone, and everything, as it seems?
The production will play a strictly limited 11-week season at @sohoplace from 10th May 2025. The Fifth Step tickets will be on sale from Monday, 27 January.

Soho Place is a small purpose built new London theatre situated at the top of Charing Cross Road next to Tottenham Court Road tube station which has a capacity of 602 seats.
The theatre has three levels of seating- Stalls, First Balcony and Second Balcony – and has an adaptable layout to suit the production. These adaptations include in-the-round seating covering all four sides of the stage, and also thrust, with seating on three of the sides. Soho Place is a contemporary, intimate, and innovative venue which offers excellent sight lines of the stage throughout, and has been designed specifically to ensure both great view and acoustics no matter where you are seated. Premium seats are located in the front row of the First Balcony, which is a fantastic vantage point from an elevated position, and also the central rows in the Stalls sitting a comfortable distance from the stage which offers a perfect view of the action.
Value can be found in the seats in the Second Balcony which despite being the furthest away from the stage have no obstructions or restrictions to the view and offer clear views of the stage. Tickets to The Fifth Step in the front row of the Stalls can also be a little cheaper due to its close proximity to the stage.
