Following the forced postponement due to the pandemic in 2020, Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman will finally premiere in the West End next year and will open at the Duke of York’s Theatre on June 10th for a limited season until to September 2nd
The Pillowman charts the investigation into Katurian, who was placed under surveillance, after fictional stories he had written began to suspiciously match up with a series of actual murders. McDonagh's play won the Olivier Award for 'Best New Play' in 2004 and later transferred to Broadway the following year.
Steve Pemberton will continue in the role he was slated in for in 2020 and play 'Tupolski'. Pemberton is perhaps best known for appearing in popular TV series such as 'Shameless', Whitechapel' and 'The League of Gentlemen'.
The role of 'Katurian' will be taken by Lilly Allen who recently made her West End debut as a member of the original cast of 2:22 - A Ghost Story.
Martin McDonagh now returns to London with The Pillowman, which will be directed by Matthew Dunster. The play will also feature sound design by Ian Dickinson and set and costume design by Anna Fleischle.
The Pillowman will open at the Duke of York’s Theatre on June 10th, 2023. The Duke of York's Theatre is a small West End theatre which has a capacity of 642 seats on three levels. The small auditorium with certain seats featuring slightly restricted views (depending on the production), so studying the seating plan in detail prior to purchase is highly recommended and can benefit both the price you pay for your ticket and the overall experience within the venue.
The best seats are located towards the front and centre of the Stalls section, around rows E and F. Try to avoid sitting too close to the stage if possible as it sits very high and you will have to look up throughout the performance. The seats at the rear are affected by the overhang of the Royal Circle which should also be noted and is usually reflected in the price. Seating in the Royal Circle however offers some excellent, unrestricted views of the stage from an elevated position and are recommended.
Value can be found in the Row H bench in the Upper Circle which will suit bargain hunters looking to secure last minute theatre tickets or cheap tickets to The Pillowman as despite being located towards the back of the theatre, it offers great overall sight-lines and is usually very reasonably priced. The Upper Circle does also have seats with restrictions but does offer good value compared to some other seats within the theatre.
