Broadchurch and Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker returns to the West End stage for the first time in over a decade to star in a new adaptation of John Webster’s classic play. The Duchess will open on October 5th at the Trafalgar Theatre and will showcase for a strictly limited 11-week season.
The Duchess has been adapted and directed by Zinnie Harris and follows the fortunes of a widowed duchess (Whittaker) who defies her family's wishes by remarrying beneath her class. But when her brothers discover her marriage, they cruelly attempt to reassert their control.
Speaking of the announcement, Jodie Whittaker commented: "I'm beyond delighted to return to the stage after over a decade and even more so to lead Zinnie Harris's incredibly powerful adaptation of John Webster's harrowing drama. Zinnie has so brilliantly propelled The Duchess of Malfi into contemporary culture, which is what originally drew me to the piece. Being able to portray the Duchess's tragic and captivating story on stage every night is a true honour."
This new production was originally developed and produced by the Royal Lyceum Theatre.
Further casting for The Duchess is to be announced in due course.
Booking & Theatre Information For The Duchess
The Trafalgar Theatre (formally Trafalgar Studios) is a small West End theatre located on Whitehall and has a capacity of 616 seats.
The best seats in the theatre are situated in rows D to H in the centre section of the Stalls which offer excellent, central, intimate, and completely unobstructed views of the stage. The rows A to C at the front of the Dress Circle are also excellent, and offer elevated views of the action down below for people who prefer to look down on the stage.
Value for money can be found in the middle rows of the Dress Circle which can tend to be slightly cheaper than the premium seats, but thanks to a decent rake have clear views of the stage. Either the side seating in the Stalls or further back from premium will also save money without compromising on the overall experience and will suit those on a budget looking for cheap tickets to The Duchess or last-minute shows in London.
