The full cast for Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre this winter has finally been announced ahead of previews beginning at the Almeida Theatre on December 10th, with an official opening night scheduled for December 20th, and performances running until February 4th, 2023. Tickets to A Streetcar Named Desire will be available soon.
BAFTA-winning actor Paul Mescal will take on the role of 'Stanley' alongside Lydia Wilson as 'Blanche' and Anjana Vasan will play 'Stella'. The remainder of the cast will feature Dwane Walcott, Ralph Davis, Eduardo Ackerman, Janet Etuk, Tom Penn, Gabriela García, and Jabez Sykes.
The plot of A Streetcar Named Desire follows sisters Stella and Blanche who reunite in New Orleans. Before long, illusions collide with reality for the fractious pair, which is escalated when Stella’s husband Stanley discovers some hidden and uncomfortable truths. A Streetcar Named Desire is one of Tennessee Williams's most famous and performed plays and will see Rebecca Frecknall returning to the Almeida Theatre to direct the production. Frecknall previously directed 'Summer and Smoke' at the venue, as well as the Olivier-winning musical, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
The creative team behind A Streetcar Named Desire features sound design by Peter Rice, set design by Madeleine Girling, costume design by Merle Hensel, and lighting design by Lee Curran.
A Streetcar Named Desire will begin performances at the Almeida Theatre from December 10th. The Almeida is a 'Fringe' or off West End theatre that combines the very best of the original 19th century features with all of the comfort of modern facilities. The venue has a curved back wall just behind the stage which has the effect of making the audience feel extremely close to the stage results in the acting area appearing to be almost as large as the auditorium is small.
The distinctive shape has been central to many Almeida productions as the intimacy of the relationship between audience and performers plays a huge part in the Almeida's success and the auditorium seats 325 people with clear views of the stage over 2 levels, with the stalls on the ground floor, and the circle one level up. Each section features comfortable bench style seating and has plenty of leg room.
