Performances of For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy will carry on for an extra four weeks until 1st June at the Garrick Theatre.
Following its initial run in the West End at the Apollo Theatre in 2023,
Ryan Calais Cameron's play returned to London in February.
The show follows the fortunes of six young Black men as they get together for group therapy, and has six new cast members for its return to the West End, including Shakeel Haakim, making his professional debut, Tobi King Bakare, Albert Magashi, Fela Lufadeju, Posi Morakinyo and Mohammed Mansaray.
Cameron wrote the play in the wake of the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin taking inspiration from Ntozake Shange’s seminal work 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf'. Over the past decade, the play has been developed with young Black men and mental health groups.
Commenting on the play's West End extension, Cameron said: “I’m so thrilled by the response to our show, and extending the run by a further four weeks is a great testament to the strength of this new cast and the legacy built by the previous one. Watching audiences responding night after night gives us hope in the power of storytelling and affirms our belief that there is an appetite for stories like this to be told in the West End.”
The producer of the play, Nica Burns added: “We are delighted by the response of the critics and audiences to our new cast and production at the Garrick Theatre. It’s fantastic to be able to extend for another four weeks to help fulfill public demand. This is a very special play and production by a wonderful writer, a definite must-see. Must close June 1.”
Booking & Theatre Info Regarding For Black Boys
The Garrick Theatre is a medium size West End theatre which has a capacity of 735 seats. Studying the seating plan in detail before purchase is highly recommended as there are numerous support pillars and circle overhangs that restrict the view from many seats. Patrons will also often hear the rattle of the underground trains during productions as tube lines run directly below the theatre.
The best views in the theatre are in the Stalls and Dress Circle section and sitting between Row D and J in the Stalls offers an excellent and unrestricted view. The Dress Circle also offers clear and detailed views of the stage and is a brilliant vantage point although this does tend to be reflected in the ticket price.
The best budget seats for those looking to secure cheap lastminute tickets to For Black Boys can be found towards the rear of the Stalls, where seats are regularly discounted due to the many support pillars and overhang from the Dress Circle. Value can also be found in the clear-view seats in the Upper Circle for a cheap alternative
