A brand new production of the true-crime musical Lizzie will showcase at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant in 2023, with performances running from October 26th to December 2nd at the venue. Lizzie is a musical which explores the 1892 case of Lizzie Borden and features three of the stars of Six the Musical, an all-female band, and a kick-ass punk rock score.
Hope Mill Theatre has revamped the punk rock musical, which will be the first UK-created version of the production, which originated as a Danish show and made its London premiere at the Greenwich Theatre in 2017.
The plot of Lizzie charts the murder case in 1892 where Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her stepmother and father in Massachusetts. The story explores potential motives Lizzie could have had for the crimes, as well as delving into her relationships with her older sister Emma, neighbour Alice, and maid Bridget.
Lauren Drew will take on the lead role as Lizzie, alongside Mairi Barclay as Bridget, Shekinah McFarlane as Emma, and Maiya Quansah-Breed as Alice. An all-female band will also feature on stage to support the cast.
The creative team behind the show will be led by choreographer and director William Whelton and includes musical director Honor Halford-Macleod, set and lighting designer Andrew Exeter, sound designer Adam Fisher, and musical supervisor Katy Richardson. Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer, Alan Stevens Hewitt, and Tim Maner contribute the lyrics and music to the show, and Maner also provides the book.
