Shanghai Dolls Tickets - Kiln Theatre

The true story of a cultural oppressor, and a cultural martyr.

When two penniless actresses meet in at auditions in Shanghai for the classic Ibsen play, A Doll’s House, they soon become inseparable friends. But as political upheaval rips its way through China, their tumultuous friendship will change not just the course of their lives, but also the course of history. One will become first female director in China. The other makes her mark as the architect of China's Cultural Revolution.

Shanghai Dolls is Amy Ng’s new play at the Kiln Theatre that explores the untold story of two of the most influential women in Chinese history – Sun Weishi and Madam Mao – and how the personal truly is political
