Liberation Squares Tickets – Brixton House

Nottingham Playhouse and Fifth Word, in association with Brixton House present Liberation Squares

After meeting at a creative writing workshop at a hip new café/workspace which used to be the local library, three teenage girls strike up an unlikely friendship. They meet regularly and challenge each other with ideas, dance routines, TikTok, and lyrics. But after discovering that the workshop is linked to the state surveillance ‘Prevent’ programme, they feel that have to fight back. But how? Loyalties become tested and friendships start to fracture as they each pursue their own avenue of resistance.

Liberation Squares is a story of sisterhood, creative expression, and freedom of speech. in an era when dissent is slowly being criminalised and the state tracks your every move, both off and online. Why is being an outspoken Muslim teenager so damn hard?

Sonali Bhattacharyya’s play focuses on British Muslim schoolgirls, whose complex adolescence is as infuriating and joyous as any other teenager, but with the added complications of cultural erasure and Islamophobia. This playful, funny, and deeply humane play places young female agency firmly into the centre stage; inspired by everything from real-world youth activists, graphic novels, and organisers, it asks what it will take to make young Muslim women the heroes of their own stories.
